Make sure you have the latest revision of this FAQ (Q1.6). CHANGES * Name server thing clarified * Added provisions for the 2.0 login structure Q 1.1: Is it possible to use Netzero without the banner? A: As the title suggests, it is possible. Read on to find out how. Q 1.2: I tried dialing with my netzero username and password, but it doesn't work. What's wrong? A: Netzero encrypts the passwords so people can't dial directly with their password and username. There is a program that encrypts the password (NZPE). Also, the username has a form of :USERNAME@netzero.net where USERNAME is your netzero username (in lower case). If your account was registered or used with Netzero 2.0, your login has a shape of "2.0:USERNAME@netzero.net". Q 1.3: Ok, so how do I get it all to work? A: This is sort of long to explain all at once, so it's broken down into easy steps: 1. Make sure you have a functioning NZ account WITH A FAKE IDENTITY. Write your username and password for it down. If you register one, make an all-number password (it will be explained later). 2. Download and unzip NZPE. If you don't have an unzip program, get one at www.winzip.com. 3. Now, go to My Computer, Dial-up Networking. Double-click on Make New Connection. After you create the new profile, right click on it and click on properties. --------------------------------------- Enter the following data: == server types tab == Uncheck ALL the boxes EXCEPT TCP/IP (the very last one). Click on [TCP/IP Settings] == Settings box, may be different == (*) Server assigned IP address ( ) Specify IP - (*) Server assigned name server addresses ( ) Specify DNS servers [X] IP header compression [X] Use default gateway on remote network - Click [OK] on the server types box. Click [OK] again on the settings box. ----------------------------------------- 4. Double-click on that connection. 5. Start NZPE. It will ask you for your password. Then it will generate your REAL password. (it should start with a 0 and end with a 1 or vice versa). If your password was all numbers, it wouldn't have generated those weird, hard-to-enter-or-remember characters. 6. In that Connect To box, enter ":username@netzero.net" without the quotes and replacing "username" with your netzero username. If you registered or used your account with v.2.0 of Netzero, your username should be in the form of "2.0:username@netzero.net". 7. For the password, enter the password that nzpe generated. You might want to [X] Save Password. 8. Connect. Q 1.4: I did everything exactly as you described above, but I still can't log on. Can you help me? A: Check the following things: * Did you enter the NZPE password correctly? * Did you enter the password into NZPE correctly? * Is the username entered correctly? * If your account was created or used with v. 2.0 of Netzero, add the 2.0 in front of the : If the answer to all of the above is YES and you still cannot connect, post the problem and the error messages to the board at: [http://www.delphi.com/freenetcubs/messages]. Q 1.5: Where do I get NZPE? A: NZPE is available at [http://nzpe.cjb.net]. Q 1.6: Where can I find new versions of the FAQ? A: At [http://www.delphi.com/freenetcubs/messages] message board. You must register in order to read it. It's under "Netzero ISP" discussion. You may need to switch the mode from "Recent" to "All messages". ------- Tip ------- Find the addresses of name servers of a normal ISP. Here's how to do that. * If you know a fast local ISP, go to their website and look for "name server addresses". *RECOMMENDED* * Do an altavista search for "name server addresses" WITH THE QUOTES. Undoubtedly, you will find quite a few ISPs listing their name servers. Then enter their IPs into the TCP/IP Settings box (leave the WINS field blank or put 0.0.0.0 there). That should somewhat speed up web surfing. You might want to experiment and find even faster ones. Note that it doesn't affect download speed, just the "Looking up host..." delay. ------- Disclaimer ------- USE THIS INFORMATION ON YOUR OWN RISK. -------------------------------------- END OF FILE
